Dujiangyan Panda Base

The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda Dujiangyan Base, also known as "Panda Paradise" and "Dujiangyan China Giant Panda Garden", was built with the aid of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in 2009. It is located on Huaizhong Road, Shiqiao (Stone Bridge) Village, Qingchengshan Town, 18 kilometers away from Dujiangyan city. The base covers an area of about 51 Hectares, and enjoys a favorable climate and natural environment with vast bamboo forest coverage and lovely scenic surroundings.

Dujiangyan Panda Base gives its major support to the panda pension, the rescue of the wild giant pandas and the research of disease control. Currently, this panda sanctuary is the world’s only giant panda disease control center, and has been the "nursing home" to more than 10 giant pandas. According to the base, the number may be increased to 40 for years to come. Pandas 25 years old or older and those rescued from the wild will reside here. 

Volunteer Program at Dujiangyan Panda Base 

Volunteer program gives a unique experience of getting close contact with the cuddly giant pandas. During the program, participants can work with skilled panda keepers to take care of the pandas. 

Interesting activities include cleaning and weighing fresh bamboo to feed the pandas, cleaning panda enclosures and bathing the pandas. At the end of the program, each participant is issued a certificate which proves their volunteering at the base.

Activities For Volunteer

The below is a sample one day volunteer program at Dujiangyan Panda Base, which give you a general idea about what for a volunteer to do.

Time	Activity
08:30~09:00	Learn safety announcement and sign the security agreement; put on the work suit, wear gloves and the volunteer pass card before go to the work place; the panda keepers will tell the panda volunteer matters need attention.
09:00~10:00	Carry out the old bamboo, wash the panda house, clean up the panda excrement, carry in the fresh bamboo, etc.
10:00~11:00	Visit other panda enclosures, look around the panda base for more giant pandas and red pandas.
11:00~11:30	Feed the pandas with panda cake or other food, like carrot, bamboo shoot or apple.
11:30-13:00	Have lunch with the panda keepers at the canteen and take a break; Walk around the base and see the cute panda if you like.
13:00-14:00	Watch a panda documentary that shows the scientific facts about panda, to understand how humans protect them.
14:00~14:50	Clean the panda enclosures and feed the pandas again.
14:50~15:30	Prepare food for the pandas, make panda cake/bread.
15:30 and after	The panda keepers answer some scientific questions about panda through your whole days’ work; Plant bamboo to improve the pandas’ environment; Finish the panda volunteer work and get the panda volunteer certificate and souvenirs.
